Announcing Share This®: OC, our orange-chocolate imperial stout to benefit Food Forward®
Set aside your beer-clean tulips and pencil in your next bottle share date in preparation for the third installment of our Share This® beer series!
Just like in 2016, our beer release schedule for 2017 brings two delectable special ingredient treatments of our charity-focused imperial stout base to our fans nationwide. Today we are proudly announcing Share This: OC, our orange-chocolate edition of our rich, chocolatey imperial stout, that will benefit Food Forward’s efforts in Southern California.
For every bottle of any Share This beer we produce, $1 is donated to a carefully selected charity. For Share This: OC, we’ve partnered up with SoCal-based Food Forward, a charity that rescues fresh, local produce that would normally go to waste from backyard fruit trees, public orchards, farmers markets, and the downtown Los Angeles Wholesale Produce Market. 100% of the recovered produce is donated to hunger relief agencies across eight counties in Southern California, reaching over 100,000 people a month! Here’s how it works:
You’ll recall in June 2016, Share This: Coffee debuted, supporting Free Wheelchair Mission’s efforts in the Philippines. Mostra Coffee carefully sourced Bourbon & Catimor variety coffee beans from the Cagat family farm of the highlands of Mindanao island to match the beer’s roasty profile. Later in October, Share This: Mole brought a collaboration with Certified Cicerone® and Chef Anne Conness, who helped us create an ideal blend of ancho chilies, chipotle peppers, cinnamon, vanilla, and cacao nibs to create a rich mole stout to benefit Free Wheelchair Mission’s efforts in Mexico.
The third release in this series was inspired by our own home county and its history as a significant orange growing region. It is the first time our donation will go towards efforts in the United States, with a hyperlocal focus on Food Forward’s work in Southern California. The rich, imperial stout base, already chock full of notes of chocolate and roast, is dosed with orange zest, TCHO cacao nibs, and vanilla beans, to create the orange-chocolate Share This: OC.
To date, we’ve been able to donate $50,000 to Free Wheelchair Mission for Share This: Coffee. That means 550 wheelchairs have been provided to those in need of mobility in the Philippines. We’ve also committed another donation of $50,000 thanks to Share This: Mole, which means even more freedom of mobility to those in need in Mexico. As our first Share This series release in 2017 approaches, we look forward to making another sizeable contribution to our new partner, Food Forward. By sharing this beer with you all, we are proudly supporting some truly incredible changes!
“We are thrilled to be the selected non-profit to benefit from the current release of Share This,” shared Food Forward Founder & Executive Director, Rick Nahmias. “The ethos, practices, and vibe of The Bruery is so aligned with Food Forward and our work to eradicate food waste and act as a bridge to get fresh healthy produce to over 1.25 million of our region’s most vulnerable. The generosity of this program and partnership is a huge boon to Food Forward and will allow us to continue to deepen our work to harvest food, fight hunger and build community across Southern California.”
We joined Food Forward at one of their Farmers Market produce gleans, and in a matter of just a few hours on a sunny Sunday, over 200 pounds of fresh food was generously set aside by vendors that had extra produce left to spare. Not only did we get to know some of the great Food Forward volunteers and leaders, we also assisted in helping rescue a substantial amount of produce that would have otherwise gone to waste. At the end of our afternoon together, 233 pounds of fresh, local produce was collected and donated to Food Finders and Lutheran Social Services Community Care. It’s a brilliant model that we are proud to stand behind.
Share your time or share this beer to support a great cause! Signing up for a produce glean is easy, and there are many opportunities in SoCal throughout the month. Visit Food Forward’s website to check their calendar for the next open opportunity.
On March 14, Share This: OC can be purchased directly from us via TheBrueryStore.com, The Bruery Tasting Room in Placentia, and the Bruery Terreux Tasting Room in Anaheim. Throughout the month of March, the beer will be hitting retail shelves at your favorite craft beer stop within our national distribution footprint.
Beers in the Share This series are released twice annually, with the next release to be announced in fall of 2017.
Beer Description:
Share This: OC is a rich, imperial stout infused with orange-chocolate flavors. It’s a profile we’re quite fond of, given the abundance of orange trees in our own backyard. Food Forward takes it one step further – reaching over 100,000 people a month throughout eight counties in Southern California (including Orange County) with recovered fresh fruits and vegetables that would normally go to waste from backyard fruit trees, public orchards, farmers markets and the downtown Los Angeles Wholesale Produce Market. To achieve the orange-chocolate flavor profile in this beer, we use orange zest, vanilla, and TCHO cacao nibs. For every bottle we produce, Food Forward receives one dollar.
Food Pairings:
Citrus-marinated skirt steak, Carr Valley Sweet Vanilla Cardona cheese, orange chocolate meltaways. Cooking with foraged foods.
