Quality Time, Quality Beer

There’s nothing quite like a shared beer, a shared meal, and shared conversation— we like to think our beers help guide all three. Inspired by flavor, many times, our beers sing harmoniously with amazing dishes, but can just as easily also inspire food creations.

This year for Father’s Day, we thought there was no better gift than a shared meal and some quality time with quality beer. Our founder and Master Cicerone, Patrick Rue, shares his perfect Father’s Day meal paired with our Father’s Day Preservation Society Pack. Enjoy!

Course 1: Cheese Appetizer + Baguette paired with Annuel

The richness, slight funk, and acidity of Annuel is a perfect pairing with a creamy, soft, washed rind cheese spread onto a toasted, buttered baguette. Red Hawk from Cowgirl Creamery fits the bill, with it’s pungent, rustic aroma, and buttery, truffled flavor. Make sure to leave the cheese out at room temperature for an hour or so before serving, to fully enjoy the flavors.

Course 2: Soup + Salad paired with Kisses Betwixt Mr. and Mrs. This is Ridiculous

This funky, acidic beer, with a hint of wine notes, is a blend of a saison and sour blonde with a light, refreshing body. It pairs well with a light, zesty salad, where the flavors are complementary, or with a cream based soup, where the flavors and textures are contrasting. A simple salad made with micro-kale, frisee lettuce, chevre (fresh goat cheese), olive oil, lemon juice, salt & pepper, and perhaps some toasted almond slices fits the bill. A creamy soup made with roasted cauliflower and roasted garlic with a garnish of dill would also be an excellent pairing.

Course 3: Smoked Short Ribs paired with Acier

Our solera-blended anniversary ale is quite rich and pairs well with equally rich food. Smoked short ribs with a side of cheesy, buttery grits would be my first choice. In addition to the dry rub applied before cooking the short ribs, I’d suggest reapplying a dry rub consisting of salt and brown sugar in the last two hours of cooking to give a burnt caramel flavor to the ribs, which matches the flavors of the beer.

Course 4: Dessert paired with Mash & Coconut

This beer is dessert on its own, though it’s Father’s Day, so let’s find the perfect pairing. I’d suggest going with a dessert that is somewhat low in sweetness but high in richness and texture, as the sweetness of the beer may be overshadowed by a sweet dessert. Mochi Cake with unsweetened whipped cream and balsamic marinaded strawberries would be a fun pairing. The spongy, buttery, slightly chewy cake enhances the toasted coconut flavor of the beer, and the tart and sweet strawberries offers a bit of contrast to the beer.
